TRS Tyre & Wheel support the Mining Industry
New Zealand’s industry leader in off highway tyre and wheel systems has recently expanded its activities to provide comprehensive rim management and repair services to the NZ mining sector. With estimated revenues of $1.5 billion per annum and an output of 38 million tones per annum, the mining sector and in particular gold and coal are important contributors to the NZ economy.
Large mines are reliant on a range of heavy wheeled equipment to extract and cart materials and it is the wide range of wheeled equipment such as dump trucks and loaders as well as underground equipment that is the focus of TRS.
Until recently the industry did not have a local suppler specialising in the management, repair and replacement of large earthmoving wheels. As these large wheels are subject to massive stresses in operation, the issue of crack testing and repair to recognised standards is a significant health and safety as well as operational issue.
TRS have invested in resources, training and inventory to provide a full maintenance and repair service to the industry. Specialist services include crack testing to Australian standards and where a crack is identified, TRS can machine off the affected area and fit a new section such as a gutter section to the existing rim saving the operator significant cost on the alternative purchase of a new wheel. Like crack testing, all engineering is carried out to Australian standards which are recognised across the NZ mining sector. Where a rim cannot be repaired TRS offer a full range of rims, wheels and components to suit all heavy mining and off highway applications ranging from 25” to 57” in wheel diameter.
To bring this service to NZ, TRS have partnered with a long established Australian company widely regarded as the leading experts in this area as well as sourced rims from leading manufacturers globally. These partnerships allow TRS to deliver solutions that are well proven in Australia as well as replacement rims that are manufactured by the same companies that supply original equipment wheels. TRS have supported this initiative with extensive staff training within the Australian mining environment including on site experience on significant Australian mine sites.
“This expansion into the heavy mining sector sits comfortably alongside our existing specialist competency in the importation and manufacture of all types of wheel equipment found off the highway as well as our position as NZ’s leading importer and distributor of off highway tyres” stated Rene Whinwray, TRS National Sales Manager who leads the mining development.
